About the roles
Forest360 is looking to employ two Operations Managers one based in the BOP/Waikato/King Country region and the other in the lower North Island (Wairarapa) region to support the growing business.

Key functions; include but not limited to:
  • Manage Health & Safety, Environment and Production compliance.
  • Coordinate contractor and crew operations
  • Management of value recovery and cost control to maximise return to forest owners
  • Management of client relationships on a day to day basis
  • Contractor scheduling and log sales planning
  • Harvest planning and preparation of blocks for harvest
  • Attracting and securing new clients and business
Key Attributes and Experience
  • A Tertiary Forestry qualification and/or five years’ experience working in a harvesting crew in a leadership role
  • A high level of commitment to health and safety
  • Proven experience and understanding of the Forest Industry
  • Excellent communicator, well organised and strong ability to prioritise
  • A can-do attitude with sound problem solving skills and attention to detail
  • Competent computer user, with experience in mapping and spreadsheet programs
  • Strong values of honesty, integrity, commitment to quality and getting things done

Ngai Tahu Forestry has created an exciting new position to manage and assist with a wide range of forestry and harvesting projects, and to provide technical support to the General Manager - Forestry and other Operational Managers. You will be joining a small dedicated and passionate team, where innovation and “thinking outside the square” is encouraged and supported.

Key elements of the role include health and safety management, estate and operational planning across all forestry operations, promoting continuous improvement of operations, particularly harvesting, and ensuring effective uptake of new technologies. In addition, you will assume responsibility for some specialist areas such as inventory and resource modelling.

Ngai Tahu Forestry manages 27,000ha of plantation forests across the West Coast, Otago, and Canterbury. Last year the company managed over 1,500 hectares of planting and the harvesting of 300,000 tons of logs for both domestic and export markets. The business is also responsible for a seed nursery (Proseed) and various third-party activities such as alluvial gold mining.

Ideally you will have:
  • A tertiary qualification in forestry or related discipline.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with a wide range of people.
  • Self-motivation with the drive and resilience to manage projects and meet targets.
  • A minimum of 5 years of forestry work experience and a genuine passion for working in the industry.
  • An awareness and understanding of Ngai Tahu values, and a willingness to learn tikanga and te reo Maori.

Fibre and Forestry Manager

Job Description:
Visy, a global leader in the packaging, paper and resource recovery industries, is looking for a Fibre and Forestry Manager for their Tumut Mill.

Reporting to the GM Pulp & Paper Tumut, the position will be wholly responsible for the management and delivery of 1.9 million metric tonnes per annum of wood fibre to the Tumut Mill. Key responsibilities will include, but not limited to:

1. Implement strategies that deliver the wood fibre required to operate the mill whilst also identifying opportunities to drive cost savings.
2. Manage all aspects of the Prime Materials budget and spend for the Tumut Pulp and Paper Mill.
3. Responsible for the management of wood fibre contracts, contractors and suppliers.
4. Oversee forest harvesting and haulage for stumpage operations.
5. Key responsibilities of the role include being the site contact for Forestry Certification and Chain of Responsibility.


1. 5+ years of proven Forestry Operations experience having been responsible for management of fibre supply, harvesting and haulage contracts.
2. Experience with management accounting and preparation of complex budgets, forecasts, cost reporting, contract reviews and regulatory compliance.
3. Proven experience in the delivery of results in line with business objectives.
4. Strong literacy, numeracy and presentation skills with highly advanced excel skills.
5. Experience with managing forestry certifications and the legislative requirements of Chain of Responsibility.
6. Stakeholder management skills with the ability to network across community, environmental and regulatory stakeholders.
7. Experience with contract management, business development and project costings.
