Logging and Planning Manager

Job Description:
Wenita Forest Products Ltd has an exciting opportunity for the right person to use their education and experience to help shape the future of our harvesting programme.

Based in Mosgiel, the Logging and Planning Manager role is responsible for planning harvesting activities for all Wenita forests and the forests of some external clients.

The role includes:

  • Planning forestry harvest activities, including road construction and landings
  • Preparing financial reports, modelling and long-term harvest plans
  • Working closely with contractors and other key stakeholders to ensure resource consents have been obtained staffing allocations are optimal and relationships are strong
  • Ensuring compliance with forestry industry regulations, including health and safety.
  • Investigating and embracing new technologies to support the vital reporting and compliance requirements of the role
We are looking for someone who gets along well with a range of people because relationships are a key part of the role.

To be successful you will ideally already have:
  • A tertiary qualification in forestry (preferable) or proven track-record, with five or more years’ experience in harvest management
  • Harvest planning and roading experience
  • An interest and strong ability to innovate with new technology
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship skills
  • Good communication and written skills

  • As Sawdoctor - To sharpen, maintain and change the saws and knives used to operate the TITC Sawmill stationary and mobile plant and processes to ensure production
  • As Academic Staff Member - To demonstrate professional leadership in the provision of quality teaching primarily of sawdoctor block and full time courses, requiring stakeholder engagement and course development.
The key responsibilities for this position include:
  • Stock control applied with timely ordering of blades, knives and consumables to support mill operation and training requirements
  • Excellent sawdoctor administration completed and housekeeping practiced
  • Mentor trainees and apprentices.
  • Performing all sawdoctor teaching functions
  • Develop programmes, courses and teaching resources
  • Inform, Understand and Support Learners
  • Teach and Facilitate Student Learning
  • Performing sawdoctor production functions
The skills, experience and qualifications required for this role include:
  • Sawdoctor trade qualification at Level 4
  • Experienced in working as a sawdoctor with manufacturing or wood processing machinery
  • Certificate in adult teaching or similar adult teaching qualification or relevant experience.
  • Teaching adult learners experience, and experience in development of courses
  • Excellent sawdoctor skills and physically robust for manual work
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • PC based computer literacy skills
  • Full drivers licence

Sawmill Operator/Table Hand

The main purpose of this position is the operation of the Resaw, Edger, Unscrambler, Docking and tables. The equipment must be operated in a competent manner with emphasis on safe operating practices, ability to maintain consistent product quality, make correct decisions in respect of maximising conversion and grade recoveries and the achievement of production targets.

As a system of rotation of operators is used within the sawmill the sawmill operator will be required to operate other machine centres (edger, resaw) within the mill during the day and will be required at times to grade, tally, sort and stack timber on the table.

The sawmill operator must be a team player with excellent communication skills and as the mill is used at times for training must possess a special empathy in being able to work with trainees and inexperienced operators.

The mill is also used to provide students/trainees with practical work related experience. Mill staff must have an affinity with these students and must be prepared to provide direction, advice and if needed training in correct and safe operating procedures.

The skills, experience and qualifications required for this role include:
  • Have experience in the sawmilling industry with a minimum of two years’ experience.
  • Have excellent time keeping .
  • Be a team player
  • Able to trouble shoot any problems that may arise
  • Willing to Teach and mentor students
  • Have an outgoing personality
  • Have excellent health and safety knowledge.
